GRAND PIANOS:

The production of a Steinway grand piano takes about 12 months. If you add two years of drying and seasoning of the wood, three years have been invested and the instrument can leave the factories in New York and Hamburg to bring joy to its new owner. Throughout the manufacturing process, every grand and upright piano is meticulously hand-crafted. The challenge is to make each instrument perfect in its own special way – a perfect Steinway.

You can choose between six grand piano models which meet every demand. Each model, no matter whether it’s the small baby grand or the concert grand piano – our largest model – is manufactured according to the same standards to offer just the same: the inimitable Steinway sound.

Model S Baby Grand

At 5 feet 1 inch in length, this “Baby” grand piano was introduced in the 1930s. Don’t let its size fool you! Steinway & Sons’ patented “Diaphragmatic Soundboard”—now found in every Steinway piano produced today—was first developed because of this model. To insure that a powerful and rich tone could be produced by a piano of this size, Steinway redesigned its soundboard, resulting in a tone that greatly outperformed others. And it still does. Every inch a Steinway, this piano is a proud addition to any home.

“When one plays a Steinway, there is a warmth and nobility in the sound that is unequalled by any other instrument”—Emanuel Ax.
Length: 5’ 1’’ (155 cm)
Width: 57 1/2’’ (146.5 cm)
Weight: 540 pounds (approx. 252 kg)

Model M Medium Grand

At 5 feet 7½ inches in length, our “Music Room” piano is a cherished member of Steinway & Sons’ amazing lineup of incomparable musical instruments. Its rich tone and responsive action is found not only in a great many homes, but in many schools of music and conservatories as well. It’s a piano that can be enjoyed every day, all day, for a lifetime.

“Thank you for providing pianos that have personality and even more importantly, soul”—Hélène Grimaud.
Length: 5’ 7’’ (170 cm)
Width: 57 ¾’’ (146.5 cm)
Weight: 560 pounds (approx. 275 kg)

Model O Living Room Grand

This 5-foot-10¾-inch piano has been a source of joy and inspiration since the very early 1900s—and it continues to be so today. It has a sound that is particularly warm and rich—far beyond what one would expect for a piano that is under 6 feet in length. Its action offers the sensitivity and control that has made Steinway famous; and no matter what you ask of this piano, it has an answer ready.

“Steinway is the only piano on which the pianist can do everything he wants. And everything he dreams”—Vladimir Ashkenazy.
Length: 5’ 10 3/4’’ (180 cm)

Width: 57 3/4’’ (approx. 146.5 cm)
Weight: 616 pounds (approx 280 kg)

Model A Parlor Grand

At 6 feet 2 inches, this amazing piano sounds like a much larger model. The powerful yet warm sound is the result of an amazing scale design that allows the solid spruce soundboard to freely and efficiently vibrate—thus producing a sound that simply cannot be experienced in any piano except a Steinway. Its slightly longer keys give the player a sense of heightened sensitivity and control. The size of this piano is large enough to satisfy those who demand a full, rich bass—yet small enough to beautifully fit into almost any home.

“With a tone so rich, I would never be afraid of the dark. Steinway is the only and the best”—Harry Connick, Jr.
Length: 6’ 2’’ (188 cm)
Width: 57 ¾’’ (147 cm)

It is the choice of the top recording studios and the piano that a great number of Steinway Artists have in their homes. It’s a wonderfully balanced and versatile piano that does extremely well in intimate settings, as well as in mid-sized venues. It is the musical instrument that those who love the piano can’t wait to play. No matter where you want to go, this is the piano that will get you there.

“I have long admired Steinway pianos for their qualities of tone, clarity, pitch consistency, touch responsiveness, and superior craftsmanship”—Billy Joel.
Length: 6’ 10-1/2’’ (211 cm)
Width: 58’’ (148 cm)

Model D Concert Grand

Quite simply, this is the ultimate piano. At 9 feet in length, this majestic musical instrument is the overwhelming choice of the world’s greatest pianists. It has the power and projection to be heard in a 2000-seat concert hall—without the aid of a microphone. It sings above the accompaniment of a symphony orchestra, yet it can whisper with equal impact. Its miraculously sensitive action allows any artist to ask of it whatever he or she wants, with full confidence of this instrument’s ability to respond. The Steinway model “D” Concert Grand is the piano that will completely satisfy those who desire the highest possible level of musical expression.

“The Steinway piano—with its beauty and power—is the perfect medium for expressing the performer’s art, drama and poetry”—Van Cliburn.

Width: 61 ¼’’ (157 cm)
Weight: 990 pounds (approx. 480 kg)

VERTICAL PIANOS:

Every budding pianist’s career begins on an vertical piano. In order to develop their gift to the full, talented players need the best possible conditions from the start. Steinway vertical pianos are in a class of their own here, characterized by exceptional touch, precision manufacturing, and the unique Steinway System, with nearly half the patents acquired by Steinway relating to the vertical piano.

The basic design principles that prove so successful in the making of grand pianos are applied equally rigorously to the verticals. Using the same quality of design, materials, and extensive hand-craftsmanship ensures that Steinway vertical pianos represent an attractive alternative where space constraints rule out a grand.

The Steinway vertical pianos are available in a large variety of veneers, colors, and finishes.

K-52

This fifty-two-inch high masterpiece is simply the most impressive vertical piano in the world. The patented diaphragmatic soundboard has the same “speaking area” as that of a six-foot grand piano. The wonderfully responsive Accelerated Action allows the player to ask anything of the piano, with full confidence that it will respond—and that it will do so beautifully. The cabinet is impressive—with intricate inlay to be found on the front upper panels of the natural wood finish models. The massive and strategically placed backposts give support where it’s most needed, thus insuring that this piano will be used for generations. Every inch a Steinway, this is a musical instrument that is a proud addition to any home.

Height: 52’’ (132 cm) Width: 60 ¾’’ (152.5 cm) Depth: 26 3/8’’ (68 cm) Weight: 600 pounds (267 kg)

1098

At forty-six and one half inches high, Steinway’s “Professional” upright has been widely used in the most demanding institutional settings for many decades. Its Accelerated Action is amazingly responsive, due in part to a unique design feature that uses the force of gravity to bring the hammers back to their rest position—which is something found only in Steinway vertical pianos. It also features Steinway’s massive and strategically placed backposts, which ensure the structural integrity of the instrument by handling the tremendous tension with complete efficiency. Extremely popular in conservatories and schools of music, this is a beautiful and impressive piano that will enrich the lives of its owners for generations.

45-10

LIMITED EDITIONS:

Throughout the 153-year history of Steinway & Sons, there has been a tradition of honoring special occasions by inviting leading designers to create exceptional instruments. Over the years, these limited editions have delighted many lucky owners. And indeed, these precious instruments are very special and unique masterpieces featuring the individual style of each designer.

125th Anniversary Limited Edition Grand Piano designed by Count Albrecht von Goertz

On the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the foundation of Steinway & Sons in Hamburg in 2005, Count Albrecht von Goertz, the creator of arguably the world’s most beautiful sports car, the BMW 507, designed the anniversary grand piano which is notable for its simplicity. Equating music with movement, Count Goertz set about creating a special design that would reflect this idea. He chose to retain the classic Steinway black finish, focusing instead on endowing various components with the sleek lines for which he is renowned. The result was an elegant and timeless design with a hint of sensuality. Since the shape of Steinway & Sons grand pianos is essentially to given, he decided to accentuate the finish, creating a dynamic interplay between contrasting satin and highly polished surfaces. In doing so, he seemed to bring the piano to life. This grand piano Model A-188 is remarkably elegant and beautiful. Rather than taking designs to extremes, Count Goertz focused on the essentials and created an instrument notable for its simplicity, something he achieved by eliminating everything that is superfluous. The “125th Anniversary Limited Edition Grand Piano designed by Goertz” is a unique grand piano full of glamour and aesthetics.

THE S.L.ED designed by Karl Lagerfeld

When Steinway invited Karl Lagerfeld in 2003 to design the 150th anniversary grand piano, his response was just a simple “Why not?” His choice of design features clear lines which balance the specially wide tail of the grand that is typical of the Steinway Model A. Karl Lagerfeld’s basic idea was to create a sled-shaped grand piano – the unusual rectangular legs in particular support this image. The idea also gave the grand piano its name: THE S.L.ED by Karl Lagerfeld. Lagerfeld has even given this name an additional meaning in a play on words: THE S(teinway). L(imited). E(dition). The choice of color for the instrument is equally unusual. Inspired by classic Japanese boxes, Karl Lagerfeld added bold red accents, while selecting an ultra-matt black as the basic color of this instrument.

150th Anniversary Limited Edition Historic Grand Piano

Such an important event like the 150th anniversary need more than just one special edition. That’s why Steinway & Sons unveiled a second anniversary grand piano besides the one created by Karl Lagerfeld. This grand piano is a recreation of the instrument used by the famous Polish pianist Ignace Jan Paderewski on his dazzling concert tour of America in 1892-93.

This instrument reflects the elegant and classic Victorian furniture design of the late 19th century. Among the striking period details are the carved, fluted legs and the exquisitely carved music desk incorporating a Steinway Lyre in the center. The historic anniversary grand piano was built in sizes B and O, and in East Indian rosewood or ebony, both with an elegant satin finish.

Tricentennial Limited Edition Grand Piano designed by Dakota Jackson

The 300th anniversary of the piano in 2000 was reason enough to present a special grand piano. The challenge was to create an art case piano that would embody the Steinway tradition of hand craftsmanship and technical innovation, and also create a new perception of how this fabulous instrument has changed the world of music. To accomplish this task, Steinway chose to collaborate with renowned furniture designer, Dakota Jackson, an artist known for his simple yet inventive approach to design. The stunning result is Tricentennial, a piano that captures the instrument’s essential beauty, while incorporating numerous engineering innovations. In this project, Dakota Jackson, who also happens to be an excellent pianist, placed great value in elegant shapes, discreet highlights, and interesting lines. The very first glance at this grand reveals its lightness, and the resulting elegance. Interesting design elements like for example the lid, which is divided into three and opens like a fan, or the elegant S-shaped lid topstick strengthen the modern touch of the grand.

Boston

GRAND PIANOS: Boston grand pianos are impressive and beautiful musical instruments due to their unique and proprietary design.

Designed by Steinway & Sons, these pianos reflect the tone, touch, and durability that are consistent with their heritage. Their tone is greatly enhanced due to the soundboard design, which incorporates a series of innovative and important features. The soundboard itself is crafted from solid spruce, which is what you would find in every high-quality piano … including the mighty Steinway concert grand. The soundboard is actually larger than those found in other brands of the same length due to the “wide-tail design” that results in a musical performance equal to that of a larger grand piano. The soundboard is also thinner than most, and strategically tapered so as to allow it to vibrate as efficiently as possible.

The “low-tension scale design” results in less pressure on the soundboard, and therefore greater freedom and ability to vibrate, thus producing a longer sustain. The bridge is placed closer to the center of the soundboard to result in a more even disbursement of energy, again resulting in the more efficient production of tone.

Together, all these things result in a rich, colorful, sustaining, clear, and powerful tone. The touch found on Boston grand pianos is extremely responsive, due to the Steinway-designed geometry found in the all-wood action fitted in each model. This sensitive and responsive touch along with the incredibly efficient soundboard allow for a dynamic range not found in far more expensive pianos. Boston grand pianos feature a bracing system that ensures their durability and longevity by handling the tremendous tension in the most efficient way possible. This structural integrity can give Boston piano owners complete confidence that they will enjoy their piano for a lifetime.
